Prosecutors believe his suicide belt malfunctioned before he escaped, but Abdeslam said he had changed his mind.

"I wanted to say today that I didn't kill anyone, and I didn't hurt anyone. Not even a scratch," he said in a sudden outburst before being cross-examined in court for the first time.

The main defendant in the trial over the 2015 Paris attacks has apologised to victims at the end of his testimony.

Prosecutors say Salah Abdeslam, 32, is the only surviving member of the so-called Islamic State cell that targeted Paris that night, killing 130 people.

"I wish to express my condolences and offer an apology to all the victims," he told the court.

Salah Abdeslam, who is believed to be the only surviving member of the group that carried out the most deadly attack ever seen in peacetime France, was found guilty of terrorism and murder charges by a criminal court on Wednesday.

The trial, which was held in a specially designed courtroom in Paris's historic Palais de Justice, lasted nine months, with over 2,000 plaintiffs and more than 300 lawyers involved.
