Polish divers find wreck of German WWII ship in Baltic Sea
https://news.yahoo.com/polish-divers...msJ6vFJ33OrggL
A team of Polish divers say they have found almost intact the wreckage of German World War II steamer Karlsruhe, which was bombed by Soviet planes and sunk in the Baltic Sea in April 1945, with the loss of hundreds of civilian and military lives.

The 10-member Baltictech team say the wreckage rests 88 meters (290 feet) under the sea dozens of kilometers (miles) north of Poland's coastal resort of Ustka.
/---/
On April 11, 1945, the steamer left the port of Pillau — which is now the Russian port of Baltiysk — with 150 troops of the Hermann Goering regiment, 25 railway workers and 888 civilians, including children, and hundreds of tons of cargo.
/---/
On the morning of April 13, 1945, the ship was spotted by Soviet planes, bombed and sank within about three minutes. Some 113 of its passengers were rescued by the convoy, among the 1,083 on board, according to Nazi Navy documents, a German cable intercepted by the British and survivor accounts stored in German archives.

Divers working off the coast of Thailand have discovered the wreckage of a submarine they believe to be the USS Grenadier which was lost in 1943 during World War II.

The Grenadier was one of 52 US subs that were sunk during the war. The 1,475-ton, 307-foot long vessel was scuttled after a Japanese plane damaged it with bombs. The crew scuttled the ship and all 76 crewmembers survived.

However, the crew was captured by the Japanese and they were beaten, tortured, and almost starved to death during their two years in captivity. Four of them didn’t survive to the end of the war.

Tunisian divers have discovered a French submarine wreck from World War I, the Ariane, which was sunk by a German submarine in 1917.

The craft was spotted off Cap Bon by managers of a diving club in the country's northeast as they were exploring new sites student divers.

"We knew they were wrecks but we didn't know what we were going to find," said the diving director of the Ras Adar club, Selim Baccar.

https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-56608713
A submersible has dived to the world’s deepest-known shipwreck.

The vessel reached the USS Johnston, which lies 6.5km (4 miles) beneath the waves in the Philippine Sea in the Pacific Ocean.

Explorers spent several hours surveying and filming the wreck over a series of dives.

The 115m-long US Navy destroyer sank during the Battle off Samar in 1944 after a fierce battle with a large fleet of Japanese warships.

Victor Vescovo, who led the expedition and piloted the sub, said: “The wreck is so deep so there's very little oxygen down there, and while there is a little bit of contamination from marine life, it's remarkably well intact except for the damage it took from the furious fight.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Sa...berts_(DE-413)
https://edition.cnn.com/travel/artic...ovo/index.html
https://www.navytimes.com/news/your-...rts-shipwreck/
A U.S. Navy destroyer that engaged a superior Japanese fleet in the largest sea battle of World War II in the Philippines has become the deepest wreck to be discovered, according to explorers.

The USS Samuel B. Roberts, popularly known as the “Sammy B,” was identified on Wednesday broken into two pieces on a slope at a depth of 22,916 feet (6,985 meters).

That puts it 1,400 feet (426 meters) deeper than the USS Johnston, the previous deepest wreck discovered last year in the Philippine Sea also by American explorer Victor Vescovo, founder of Dallas-based Caladan Oceanic Expeditions. He announced the latest find together with U.K.-based EYOS Expeditions.

The team plans to send divers to U-111 next year, as well as complete a 3-D photogrammetric model of the U-boat. They’re keeping its exact location under wraps.

Maritime historian Aaron Hamilton notes that the U-111 marks an important moment in the technological evolution of submarines. “The fact that it’s been found and can now be documented and photographed is a is a significant achievement,” he says.

Lost wreck of WW1 warship found in 'remarkable' condition
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c9qg4z1149eo
A wreck discovered off the Aberdeenshire coast is believed to be a lost Royal Navy warship sunk by a torpedo during World War One.

HMS Hawke was discovered by a team of divers about 70 miles east of Fraserburgh earlier this week in "remarkable" condition.

More than 500 of the ship's crew died when it was attacked by a German U-boat in October 1914.

The ship caught fire and, following an explosion, sank in less than eight minutes with just 70 sailors surviving.
