There is some basis in the recorded history for Cameron's chain of events: "...of the 20 witnesses who described the final plunge at the American and British investigations, 16 firmly declared that the Titanic either split in two or at least was breaking up as she went under. There is, moreover, a remarkable similarity about what they saw...

Q: Was it known at the time of sinking that the Titanic split in two? If so, why did many films over the years portray it going down in one piece?
A:It was known at the time by at least one person...Jack Thayer, a 17-year-old first-class passenger, who made drawings of the ship splitting in two as it sank. The drawings he made also showed the stern rising vertical after it detached from the forward section, and before it sank beneath the surface. He described his experiences with Titanic's sinking in a 1940 pamphlet known for its vivid detail "Titanic: A Survivor's Story and the Sinking of the S.S. Titanic".

The analysis supports some witnesses' testimony that the ship likely began to fracture at the surface, and that the fracture was completed at some unknown depth below the water's surface. The resulting stress levels in the strength deck below the root of the second expansion joint (aft), and in the inner bottom structure directly below, were very high because of the unusual flooding occurring in the forward half of the ship. These patterns of stress support the argument that initial hull failure likely occurred at the surface. Additional work is being performed to investigate this further.
