Jacques-Yves Cousteau died on 25 June 1997 in Paris, aged 87. Despite persistent rumors, encouraged by some Islamic publications and websites, Cousteau did not convert to Islam, and when he died he was buried in a Roman Catholic Christian funeral.[14] He was buried in the family vault at Saint-André-de-Cubzac in France. An homage was paid to him by the city by the inauguration of a "rue du Commandant Cousteau", a street which runs out to his native house, where a commemorative plaque was affixed.

Evidence of Hoax
There is a certain quote on the internet which supposedly quotes Cousteau saying that he "chose" Islam after studying that different oceans did not mix together, something which "the Qur'an talks about". This quote is false and is not attributed to Cousteau by any reliable source.
The following letter proves that Cousteau did not convert to Islam, and there is no additional evidence to support the claim that he did.

Sir, We have received your letter and we thank you for your interest in our activities. We state precisely to you that Commander Cousteau has not become a Muslim and that this rumor passes around without foundation.

A persistent rumor is spreading amongst muslims claiming commandant Cousteau to have embraced islam after oceanographic findings thanks to the Koran.
This rumor has spread since the 1980's by muslim propagandists. They quote a verse of the koran about rivers ending in the sea. Regarding those propagandists, commandant Cousteau is supposed to have embraced islam after seeing that fresh water do not mix with sea water.
Which is twice wrong !
First, commandant Cousteau never embraced islam and, second, fresh water of course does mix with sea water, as anybody can check.
Propagandists use the trick that fresh water do not uniformly and instantly mix with sea water... as any liquid does if slowly poured in a small quantity into a vast quantity of any other liquid being of a different density !
For example, ink does not uniformly and instantly mix with the water of a swimming pool if you slowly pour ink into the pool. And also for hot water staying at the surface of cold water ! (that's how a water-heater and an electric coffee-maker works...)
But propagandists looking for jihadists avoid to tell this, may be they don't even know it, as it sounds as if they really believe commandant Cousteau embraced islam.
Many more similar rumors are spread about famous people who supposedly embraced islam (Victor Hugo, Napoléon, Neil Armstrong etc...) but the rumor about commandant Cousteau seems to be the one spreading the fastest and being more efficient to turn people to radical islam, mainly among students of universities, this due to its pseudo-scientific aspect.
